About Darby

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
Darby is a 6-8 months old Havanese mix that was found as a stray. He was so fearful of people when we first saw him in his kennel at the shelter that he would hide in the corner and bite out at us if we came to close. After sitting with him for awhile we could tell he was a great dog just a bit scared and reactive. He slowly started to come closer and closer so we were able to pet him and let him know we were friendly. In his foster home it took only a few hours and he was a happy puppy. Now Darby runs around with his foster brothers and snuggles with his foster mom like any other puppy. His favorite thing is a good game of chase or fetch with other dogs. He is also just fine throwing a squeaky toy around for himself to play with. He runs around the backyard jumping over the other dogs like a piece of popping pop corn. You would never know he has any fears in his foster home. When new people come around he is still quite fearful but with continued socialization we think he will become a more confident puppy. Because of his fear we will not be placing Darby in a home with children. Its not because he won’t love the children in his own home once he knows them but the children’s visiting friends not knowing to leave him alone until he is comfortable. Applicants should be ready for puppy antics. He has a ton of energy so would love a home with another playful dog in it that he can play with for hours. Darby loves to steal socks and flip flops and is still working on his potty training. With consistency and frequent potty breaks he has done very well and only had a few accidents in his foster home. He is perfectly crate trained and actually feels comfortable in his crate. He has been known to jump in it at bedtime when he is tired and put himself to sleep. Darby weighs about 8 pounds so will be the perfect size to be your carry on on the airplane. He loves other dogs but probably wouldn’t be a good option for a doggie daycare. He would rather get to know a dog walker that he trusts to come in to let him out and take him for a walk if his new mom or dad work outside the home.
